Summer Fun No. 19, Mr. Popper's Penguins

{sorry about the crazy exposure on this one. i am not the master of the iphone flash}

Guest blog post by Jack:
This week we read Mr. Popper's Penguins and then saw the movie.  I think it's cool to read the book before you see the movie and I really like to do both.  My favorite part of the book was when they filled the basement with ice & water and the kids & penguins started sledding on their bellies across the room.  My favorite part of the movie was when Mr. Popper taught the penguins to dance.  I liked the book more than the movie because he had more penguins and they did shows for people.

My sisters did a crazy dance to the music during the credits at the end (to Ice Ice Baby) which was really funny.  There were only 8 people in the theater counting us.
{we were actually alone in the theater until after it started! the 4pm movie on thursday is not a big draw}

Mom's take:
I recommend this book SO highly!!!  I read it aloud to all three kids and they were all interested.  EJ sat still and listened as we read 20-30 minutes at a time (something that she has never been done before) and when we'd stop she could retell the plot points and really got it.  I think she actually visualized a story for the first time (there are just a few illustrations each chapter).  Jack and EJ both loved it!  And Olivia sat for quite awhile too...she did get up from time to time, but was always listening and usually the first to tell Matt that we read Mr. Popper when he got home.

The movie?  Definitely not as good, but I think I would recommend it as a redbox rental or a library borrow.  It wasn't a bad movie, but was definitely slow in parts and was modernized when I really felt like it didn't need to be (divorce, estranged children, big business).  The kids did really like the movie and laughed like crazy (lots of physical & bathroom humor that is sure to please), but I'm not sure how much of the plot they would have understood without reading the book (or even did understand at all).
{read this book asap!}

Is it bad I didn't realize there was a book? And to think I call myself a "reader!"

Jack - LOVED that you contributed to the post. Hopefully we'll be reading more from you throughout your summer adventures :-)
